Why Hospitality Is Different

The Season Sets
the Headcount

A Gulf Coast resort doubles its staff for the summer and halves it in September. A casino staffs up for a weekend event and down on Monday. A convention hotel needs two hundred banquet servers for three days. Every one of those workers is paid under wage and hour rules that are different from any other industry: tip credits, tip pooling, service charges, split shifts and overtime calculated across tipped and non tipped hours.

The employer behind that workforce has to run payroll that gets the tip credit right every week, onboard and release hundreds of seasonal workers without fees, carry comp matched to housekeeping and kitchen classifications, and keep I-9 compliance clean through constant turnover. Revelation carries that stack for properties and the staffing firms that serve them.

the property difference

Revelation is headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, between the Gulf Shores resort corridor and the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos. We employ seasonal and event workforces across the region every week.

The Compliance Stack

Four Requirements a Hospitality
Workforce Can Trigger

These are the obligations that separate hospitality employment from desk employment.

Wage and HourTip Credit, Pooling and Service Charges

Federal law allows a tip credit against minimum wage only when specific notice, pooling and record keeping rules are followed, and many states set their own tipped minimums or prohibit the credit outright. Service charges are not tips and are taxed differently. Errors here produce back wage claims across the entire tipped workforce. Revelation runs tipped payroll to the rule in every state.

BenefitsACA and Variable Hour Employees

Seasonal and variable hour staff require measurement and stability period tracking to determine benefits eligibility under the Affordable Care Act, and the reporting that follows. Getting it wrong triggers penalties per employee. Revelation tracks hours, determines eligibility and files the reporting as part of employment.

EligibilityI-9 Compliance Through Turnover

Hospitality turnover means continuous onboarding, and every hire requires a correctly completed I-9 within three days. Audits find errors at scale. Revelation completes I-9 verification through digital onboarding and retains the records for the required period.

InsuranceHospitality Comp Codes and EMR

Housekeeping, culinary and banquet classifications see frequent soft tissue and burn claims, and a bad year raises the cost of every hour worked for three years. Revelation classifies correctly, manages claims to closure and runs return to work programs to protect the modification rate. See risk and insurance →

Platform vs Property EOR

Why a Global Hiring Platform
Cannot Staff a Resort

Software led EOR platforms are built to onboard a knowledge worker in a new jurisdiction. A tipped, seasonal workforce asks for things their model does not contain.

FAQ

Hospitality EOR Questions

What does an Employer of Record do for a hotel, resort or casino?

+

The EOR becomes the legal employer of your seasonal, event or outlet staff. It runs weekly payroll with tip credit and service charge compliance, withholds and files taxes, carries workers compensation matched to hospitality classifications, administers benefits and ACA tracking, and completes I-9 verification. You keep full control of who works, in which outlet, and under whose supervision.

Can an EOR run tipped wage payroll correctly?

+

Yes. Tip credit, tip pooling, service charges, split shifts and overtime across tipped and non tipped hours are calculated to federal and state rules every week, with the notice and record keeping the tip credit requires.

What happens at the end of the season?

+

Seasonal staff are released with no termination fees and no minimums. When the next season opens, returning staff can be re employed in days with their records intact, and anyone you want to keep can be converted to your own payroll with no fee.

Can event staff be onboarded for a single weekend?

+

Yes. Digital onboarding processes hundreds of event workers in days with I-9 verification and tax forms completed, and there are no setup fees for short engagements.

Is an EOR the same as a hospitality staffing agency?

+

No. A staffing agency finds and supplies workers. An Employer of Record employs workers you have already identified and carries the payroll, tax, insurance and compliance obligations of employing them. Revelation is an EOR and is often engaged alongside a property's existing recruiting function or staffing partner.
